Very Definition of Totalitarianism

July 17, 2007

So apparently, Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) is in the news for a speech he gave to the group Atheists for Human Rights. Others more capable than I have already shredded the unprincipled Congresscritter for a variety of his nutty demagoguery.

I do find interesting, however, over-the-top statements like these:

Vice-President Dick Cheney’s stance of refusing to answer some questions from Congress was “the very definition of totalitarianism, authoritarianism and dictatorship”, [Ellison] added.

When I’m in a particularly sour mood, I sometimes fantasize about these leftwing nutjobs getting what their words actually mean. Sometimes, I wish they would be rounded up in the middle of the night by large men in dark uniforms, blindfolded, taken to some unknown cell, and tortured until they confessed to some crime or another. This happened to friends of my family back in Korea during the 80’s when the Chun Doo-Hwan dictatorship was in power. It’s happening today in places like Russia, Venezuela, and the favorite vacation spot of the Hollywood Left, Cuba. People have disappeared for saying to friends far less than what Ellison got up in front of a crowd to say.

For the likes of Ellison to invoke these powerful words in service to his shallow and ultimately stupid political maneuvering insults all those who have suffered under actual totalitarianism, actual authoritarianism, and actual dictatorship. Words have meaning — and no one should know that better than someone like Keith Ellison who has made a career out of race baiting and complaint-mongering. Every intellectually honest person should look at what Ellison is doing and feel utter revulsion.

This kind of demagoguery based entirely on hyper-emotionalism and total lack of regard for facts or importance of language reminds me of another demagogue:

so, you want to round up and torture those who have a different opinion from you…? I guess you don’t see the irony in that do you?

You haven’t even read the post, have you?

    Idiot.

Yes i have read the post. In particular the bit where you wrote – “Sometimes, I wish they would be rounded up in the middle of the night by large men in dark uniforms, blindfolded, taken to some unknown cell, and tortured until they confessed to some crime or another.”

So I guess you missed the part where I state that is exactly what happened to friends of my family living under a military dictatorship in S. Korea.

It’s disgusting when American politicians routinely invoke words like totalitarianism in service to their shallow partisan purposes, when people in this world, today — not generations ago, but right now — are suffering from real totalitarianism.

But I guess you lefties just don’t get that, do you?

No amigo, I read that part too. Which made it all the more astounding to me that you could joke about doing the same to YOUR political opponents. How does that make you better than those who perpetuated the same in S Korea?

I guess you havent heard about the 10 steps to totalitarianism? – http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2064157,00.html
It’s closer to home than you think.

    Again, missing the point.

I want irresponsible politicians to STOP WITH THE HYPERBOLE. Right now, that’s all on the Left, but if there are people on the Right doing the same, I want them to stop too.

It is deeply insulting to people who actually have lived through, or are living through, real totalitarianism.

I still haven’t heard you condemn the hyperbole… unless you too believe that Cheney’s refusal to answer questions from Congress (which he doesn’t need to do) is the same thing as rounding people up in the middle of the night?

Maybe I can meet ya halfway there, TS. I agree that hyperbole can be a pain – though we are all guilty of it from time to time no doubt – I think the bigger problem is outright lies and distortions, from politicians and the media. I don’t accept this all comes from the Left, it tends to come from all sides. I think it would be disingenous(sp?) of you to suggest the Right does not engage in what we may call BS politics.

Anyway, I do condemn BS from whoever makes it. I have been known to slag off those on the Left who engage in such, George Galloway springs to mind. For every 2 decent things he says he has a terrible habit of saying a BS thing as well, and I deplore that.

And as for Cheney…. His refusal to answer to Congress is a form of high-handed arrogance that is to be condemned. Just as is his governments policy of ‘extraordinary rendition’ to secret and not-so-secret gulags. I’d suggest to you that this is a form of totalitarianism. I read only today that Bagram detention(withouwice trial) centre is now nearly twice as big as the obscene Guantanamo Bay. I think the existence of these sites is offensive to anyone with half a brain and an iota of compassion, common sense, and respect for the Law.

    Peace out.

Quote of the Moment

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ---C.S. Lewis
