Corporations Breed Mediocrity

July 9, 2007

Was having dinner last night with a couple of neighbors when the topic turned to work, careers, and life in corporate America. Many of us at the table had spent time either in our own companies or in startup environments, and were working in large corporations whose names you have heard of. All of us are considered stars in our companies, supposedly slated for further leadership roles in the future, and in some cases, seen as in line for senior executive positions, and so on and so forth.

So I found it extremely interesting that we all agreed universally that corporations breed mediocrity. Why is that?

We all agreed that big companies make money despite themselves, not because of themselves.

Why is that?

Quote of the Moment

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ---C.S. Lewis
